Not your average teen series
Interview with Pete Bauer, the Writer and Director behind Nikki & Babs: Dos and Doubts
They say that opposites attract, but when Nikki and Babs are forced to spend the summer together, neither one of them is too sure that the cliche rings true. Cloud Ten Pictures is helping to get the word out worldwide about a new Christian teen series, "Nikki and Babs: Dos and Doubts", the story of two teens as they discover their clashing differences in both personality and social life, eventually overcoming them to become best friends. The show follows the duo as they grow spiritually and learn a number of moral lessons throughout their summer spent together. Created by independent Christian film company Sonlight Pictures, the show consists of 10-15 minute long episodes that focus on Nikki and Babs as they partake in humourous adventures and cover important biblical themes. Founder of Sonlight Pictures and the show's Writer/Director, Pete Bauer, envisioned the series with the hopes of creating an original teen drama that would incorporate humour without relying on innuendos or inappropriate situations. "Our teens are inundated with shows that glamorize immoral behaviour, and we wanted to create a show that could be funny through personality clashes and situations, and not have to delve into immorality to get a laugh," explained Bauer. "During the development process, I met with the two main actors, Dorothea and Tiffany, and used their natural personalities as the basis for the characters. We then took that foundation and expanded the character personalities in opposite directions to create humorous situations while, at the same time, having the main characters face various, everyday moral challenges that teens must deal with during this important phase of their lives." The series may seem like an alien concept to most teens at first - Christian youth will be excited to learn that an interesting, fun television series exists that doesn't contradict their personal beliefs. "We think the teens will gravitate to the show because of the style, the humour and the message within it. Sadly, it is also the type of show that most children today have never seen before," said Bauer. "I have a nephew who is 16 years old and - when he watched the show, he mentioned to his father that this type of show was totally alien to him. He

loved our series because it was entertaining and didn't include material that he felt contradicted his faith." Nikki and Babs: Dos and Doubts embraces the style of "Christian Cotton Candy", says Bauer. Significant issues are approached throughout the series, but in a light-hearted manner that keeps the scenes fresh and often comical for audiences. "We cover themes such as being judgmental, idol worship, vanity, envy and trust," said Bauer. "Jesus does not call us to lead a good life; he calls us to lead a holy life. In today's society, many simple things that impede our relationship with God are normally accepted. Most television shows try and display the virtue of envy or vanity, as if they are something for which to be strived. So, we wanted to do the opposite. We wanted to show how the small ways we act in our lives display our moral compass. That envy can impact relationships. That being vain is choosing selfishness over selflessness." Initially intended as merely a web-only series, Nikki and Babs: Dos and Doubts has garnered an overwhelmingly positive response, and Bauer has been contacted by youth group leaders all over the country who hope to use the show as a means of introducing their youth group teens to the series' impactful moral lessons. Eventually, Bauer would like to see Nikki and Babs starring in their own feature film. "One of the greatest lessons I've learned through my faith journey while making this show is that the Lord dreams much bigger than we do. Our goal for this series was so much smaller than it has become," he said. "If I would have done my will, instead of the Lord's, then this project would have reached only a few hundred people. But, the Lord dreams much bigger than we do and through his blessing we have found Cloud Ten to get this series out worldwide. Jesus' generosity is beyond anything we could imagine within ourselves. I no longer worry about how people will see our work at Sonlight Pictures, I just know my job is to do the work and follow God's path. He'll take care of the rest." |
